But while the house dates back to the 1940s, a number of thoughtful updates have brought it up to the present day and added modern luxuries that make this a dreamy retreat. The kitchen and bathroom have been fully renovated, a large deck added to the back with a modern hot tub, and even a home gym added in a detached garage.
Perched on top of Shandelee Mountain, the house benefits from sweeping bucolic views, while still being just a stone’s throw from one of the region’s most vibrant towns. So in the event you get tired of soaking in the hot tub overlooking your own flower garden, there’s no shortage of cafes, restaurants, and galleries on your doorstep.
The heart-shaped key latch unlocks the door to Shandelee Mountaintop Cottage, just one of many retained characterful details. Inside, the entryway leads into an open-plan living and dining room centered around a stone-surround wood-burning fireplace and cocooned beneath original wood beams. There’s enough room to gather without losing the intimacy that makes a cottage feel like a cottage. Adjacent to the living room, the dining nook is bathed in natural light from its large south-facing windows. With enough space to seat six people and benefiting from feeling like its own distinct space while remaining open to the rest of the communal areas; perfect for hosting.
The adjacent kitchen was renovated from the studs and updated with newer appliances and botanical wallpaper that brings the garden inside. Everything you need; and nothing you don’t: a sink with a view of the hydrangeas outside, large refrigerator, modern electric stove, and a galley layout that keeps everything in reach. With the living and dining room at one end, and direct access to the garden from the other, dining inside or out becomes a breeze. And if all that sounds a bit too much for you, Catskill Park with its pristine rivers and trails is just 10 minutes away.
