Local design firm Homestedt, known for their custom Catskills houses, fell in love with this house for its magical setting. Then in 2021 they set about painstakingly rebuilding it to create a vision inspired by their Scandinavian roots. The result was a space that exudes craftsmanship, warmth and simplicity, but also functions to make daily living, working and hosting seamless and joyful.
A renovation doesn’t do justice to the work that was done here - from the foundation up, this house was almost completely rebuilt, and done so with a clear intention. From the radiant floor heat and fireplaces upstairs and down, to the wrap around deck with integrated plunge pool, shower and kitchen; it’s a house designed with the quiet confidence of those that not only know how to craft a home, but also know how to make the most out of it in every season.
The walls and ceilings are clad in custom-milled basswood, solid white oak floors run throughout the house, and natural light pours through oversized windows, drawing your eye to the woodland and brook beyond. While the aesthetic speaks for itself, a closer inspection reveals thoughtful design elements that make living feel effortless. From the seamless integration between the open living space and the huge wrap-around deck, to the custom pocket doors, custom kitchen, built-in sofas and shelving, efficient heating and thoughtful design elements throughout (think washer and dryer incorporated into the walk-in closet), the house is designed to make daily living and hosting guests easy and enjoyable.
The main floor of the house was designed to flow. From the open plan living space to the primary bedroom suite, guest bedroom, office and bathroom, all aided by custom pocket doors. Throughout it all, built in details add character and practicality; from the shelving, to the seating, kitchen, and wardrobes. No detail was left to chance. The primary suite is a perfect example of this. It transitions directly into a bathroom suite with soaking tub, Tadelakt shower, and custom vanity; then separately to a large walk-in closet with integrated washer and dryer.
The same thoughtful principles apply to the lower floor. Used primarily by the current owners as a guest suite, it's designed with the same attention to detail as the main floor. From the large stone fireplace blending into the lime-wash walls to the hidden projector and fold-away wet bar, it’s a space to be enjoyed by guests and owners alike.
The entire property is designed to be enjoyed from the wraparound cedar wood deck; with it’s integrated plunge pool, nearby shower, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, dining, and lounging areas. So whether you’re spending an afternoon reading a book by the pool, or hosting a group of friends for dinner, every convenience has been considered. Then if you ever persuade yourself to leave, the land connects to a quiet gravel road ideal for quiet strolls in every season.
